On October 14th, the New York Times reported on Drs. Gorfine and Popowich’s participation in the complicated surgery of Holli, a 23 year-old gorilla in the Bronx Zoo. The doctors were called in after an ultrasound revealed a deep abscess in Holli’s abdomen. In the operating room, the doctors removed part of Holli’s colon and were astounded to discover the similarities between ape and human anatomy:
“We didn’t know what to expect,” Dr. Popowich said. “Once we got inside, it was all the same. You’d think it was a human.”
