Diagnosing Anorectal Disease

For the purpose of diagnosing, the first step is a history and physical examination. From there, we may perform a variety of other steps including endoscopy, ultrasound, and imaging (such as CT scan or MRI).

We treat a wide range of anorectal diseases, including:

  • Hemorrhoids
  • Perianal abscess and fistula
  • Anal fissures
  • Rectal prolapse

In addition, various other malignant conditions may require operative intervention.

In some cases, when an abdominal surgery is not recommended, the surgery is performed through the anus. A commonly performed procedure is call a perineal rectosigmoidectomy (also known as an Altemeier procedure). In this surgery, the prolapsed rectum is surgically excised through the anus. After removal of the prolapsed segment, the two ends are sutured together.

With such substantial experience, you can trust that our surgeons are very practiced with both the diagnosis and treatment of anorectal disease. Your Manhattan colorectal surgeon will discuss the options which are available to you for treatment with you during your consultation.

We can also answer any questions that you have during this time. Please contact Manhattan Surgical Associates now at 646.798.4606 if you would like to make an appointment for a consultation.
