  • I have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Popowich.

I have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Popowich. I received the utmost attention and the most professional care both in his office and during surgery. He is very enjoyable and I left feeling comfortable and confident. He is very caring. He is truly a wonderful doctor and I would recommend him to everyone. He is always very nice.

  • Dr. Popowich and his team probably saved my wife's life!

  • This is a professional who cares about his patients.

This is a professional who cares about his patients. He takes the time needed to properly diagnose, treat, and answer questions. He is always available after you leave his office as well, either by phone or text!

  • I am most grateful for the skill of this gifted surgeon as well as his humanity.

From the moment I first met Dr. Popowich in a cramped cubicle of a busy emergency room on a holiday weekend, I was immediately struck by his focus and attention to what I was telling him and subsequently comforted by his confident and compassionate manner as he described what he believed my condition to be, outlining all the possible scenarios of the surgery I would require. When the scan confirmed I had acute appendicitis, Dr. Popowich immediately came to me and prepared to take me into surgery. Once again he patiently outlined what he would be doing and all the possible scenarios for my husband, showing uncommon kindness in allaying our fears for the upcoming procedure. Later that evening as I recovered from the surgery I was aware how blessed I was to have had him for my surgeon for something so random and unexpected; the ensuing days have only intensified these feelings. My healing process has been as he had described and I am most grateful for the skill of this gifted surgeon as well as his humanity. I believe him to be an excellent doctor and one that would be a best choice in facing difficult health decisions.

  • Dr. Popowich was caring and transparent with every part of the procedure and follow up. He was incredible when it came to the education, preparation and post-op directions and made sure myself and my family were fully prepared every step of the way.

Dr. Popowich was so compassionate during such a tumultuous time for me and my family. While I was mentally prepared for the surgery, my parents needed some extra comfort and care while I was going through the process. Dr. Popowich was caring and transparent with every part of the procedure and follow up. He was incredible when it came to the education, preparation and post-op directions and made sure myself and my family were fully prepared every step of the way. The surgery went flawlessly and his kindness and big hardheartedness totally won over my confidence, my parent's confidence and I will be seeing Dr. Popowich for as long as he's practicing medicine.

  • From the moment I met Dr. Popowich, I knew that I was in good hands!

From the moment I met Dr. Popowich, I knew that I was in good hands! Dr. Popowich is experienced in his field and is confident in his decisions. His positive attitude and approach made me trust him immediately. Dr. Popowich takes pride in his work and creates an atmosphere that immediately puts you and your family at ease. He develops a strong relationship through caring and compassion that lets you know that you are all in this together. Dr. Popowich takes the time to listen to you and welcomes questions. He also meticulously reviews and explains all the medical reports, tests and diagnosis. He takes as much time as necessary to discuss all options and his experience allows him to offer sound guidance as to treatment and surgical procedures. I would highly recommend him.

  • You really do have a special gift as a surgeon and as a person. I will be forever grateful for you. Thank you for giving me my life back!

Dr. Popowich, I cannot put into words how appreciative I am with your treatment over the past year. Your dedication to my recovery has been the difference maker in my continued progress. What truly sets you apart is your absolute devotion to me as your patient. You made me feel like I was your only patient and made yourself available whenever I needed. I have had ulcerative colitis since I was very young. The various doctors that provided treatment for me could never relate with how I was feeling. I would always get this is "normal" and part of having the disease speech. When I was told that surgery was my only option I felt defeated, as if I would never be "me" again. I researched the surgery extensively and tried to learn as much as I could. The gastroenterologist gave me a few different doctors to choose from and you stood out to me. There was nothing but positive reviews about you which made me feel at ease with the road I was heading down. When I scheduled my appointment with you I had a new found hope that there was going to be a solution for me. The day of my appointment I was almost positive that you would be the surgeon performing my surgery. When you told me that you had the same surgery, I knew instantly this was the right decision. In that moment, I knew that I finally found not only a doctor but someone who understood what I was going through emotionally, mentally and physically. It was such a relief to not have a doctor go look online for why I was having certain symptoms or pull out a medical book to explain something to me. I was so sick and basically lived in a hospital for six months before I met you. The day I scheduled my first surgery it was the happiest that I had been in a long time. I knew that my pain and suffering would soon be over and I can have my life back. It was a rough road through the entire process but as I look back on everything I wouldn't change a thing. Words cannot describe how thankful I am for you and everything you have done for me. You really do have a special gift as a surgeon and as a person. I will be forever grateful for you. Thank you for giving me my life back!

  • I wanted to thank you for everything you have done for me.

I wanted to thank you for everything you have done for me. You are truly one of a kind. It has been a rough year for me but the personal attention and kindness shown by you and your staff has helped tremendously. Thank you for your compassion and patience. You always took the time to explain things to me and somehow, as tough as it was, you gave me the hope that I needed. Funny thing, my dad always told me, you'll never find a "great" doctor who also has "good bed side manner." I did find him! Dr. Chessin, you are not only an exceptional doctor but a great human being. I'm not happy I have Crohn's but I'm grateful I have you by my side. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

  • Thank you for everything!

Every day, every week, every year, new patients come and need immediate care. You could easily get used to your job and see the people you treat in a fog. Yet, every day you come back with a new smile and you always go the extra mile. You continue to do what you do best without ever thumping your chest. Seeing it made us believe that behind the title there is a gentle human being. Thank you for everything!

Thank you so much for your creative work patching me up! Thank you so much for your creative work patching me up! My scar is healing very nicely but what's even better is that I feel amazing! I cannot believe that I really do not feel a thing - almost as if I was never even sick or had surgery. Surgery is a very serious matter and your confidence and honesty really put me at ease to realize that everything would be okay. Since surgery, I have really developed a new appreciation for life and have experienced things (and food!) that I have been unable to for a long time. I am really very happy that you were my surgeon. Thank you again.

Joel Bauer, MD

  • Dr. Bauer has been a very concerned and dedicated physician and surgeon. His expertise and experience in the field and specifically about my medical history has been outstanding.

I have been a patient of Manhattan Surgical Associates for approximately 40 years. My initial surgery was performed by Dr. Gelernt with continued care then and over the years by Dr. Bauer. During this time, Dr. Bauer has been a very concerned and dedicated physician and surgeon. His expertise and experience in the field and specifically about my medical history has been outstanding. He is very responsive to emergency calls and does not hesitate with a quick office visit and also to refer me for immediate attention to a colleague within and outside the practice. If warranted, he phones colleagues and arranges for me to be seen the same day. Dr. Bauer always returns phone calls and information about my condition is always detailed for my understanding. Dr. Bauer and everyone in the office are caring and compassionate, qualities that are particularly comforting for a patient.

  • I cannot thank you enough for all you did for us. I am happier and freer that I have been in twenty years.

All is going well and improving daily. We are so incredibly happy that he had another good scan. What a relief. I cannot thank you enough for all you did for us. I am happier and freer than I have felt in twenty years. Thank you for knowing just how much this surgery meant to me and thank you for not giving up when things got difficult. You are truly the best. Number 1!

  • Thanks for giving me my life back.

Thanks for giving me my life back. I am so grateful & appreciative. Thank you!

  • He is an amazing surgeon who put my life back together. His after care was great as he was always attentive and concerned with my well being.

Dr. Bauer performed surgery (jpouch) on me two years ago. He is an amazing surgeon who put my life back together. His aftercare was great as he was always attentive and concerned with my well-being. Dr. Bauer got to the root of any problems I had quickly and did stop until everything was right. I would highly recommend Dr. Bauer as he is a brilliant surgeon and very dedicated to the care of his patients.

  • Beyond being a great surgeon, he is very professional and takes the time to explain what is involved with each procedure, makes you feel comfortable to ask questions and does it all with great compassion.

Dr. Joel Bauer has been my doctor for close to 20 years. After suffering for many years with Ulcerative Colitis, it was during a flair up and treatment in my local hospital that my colon perforated and I needed immediate surgery. I was given Dr. Bauer’s name as the expert in performing successful sub-total colectomies and was at the cutting edge of this complicated procedure. He and his team were making big strides in performing this surgery with the least amount of complications, time spent in the hospital for recovery, and great success rates. My surgery and recovery were extremely successful and I know that it is because of Dr. Bauer and his surgical excellence. Beyond being a great surgeon, he is very professional and takes the time to explain what is involved with each procedure, makes you feel comfortable to ask questions and does it all with great compassion.

  • Dr. Bauer never gave up on me!

I was 15 years old when I first met Dr. Bauer and Dr. Gelernt. A very sick young woman 'shopping around' for a surgeon to perform an emergency surgery to remove my large intestine ravaged by ulcerative colitis - an inflammatory bowel disease that runs the spectrum of severity. In my case I had no other choice but surgery and Dr. Bauer was offering me the chance at what was considered at the time to be the 'state of the art' operation that only few surgeons were performing. It would be a way for me to live my life without a bag. I would have no way of knowing at the time I first met Dr. Bauer that it was only the beginning of a more than 30 year relationship with a man that was not only my surgeon, but the clerkship director of my surgery rotation while I was a third year medical student at Mount Sinai Medical School, and now he is a colleague and someone I consider to be my friend. Despite many corrective surgeries over the years Dr. Bauer never gave up on me and had the sense and interest to see I was a fighter just like him. With his surgical genius I was able to marry, raise two healthy amazing young men, and become a journalist, a physician, and national leader in teaching physicians and healthcare providers to be more effective communicators with their patients, mostly based on my experiences as a patient and now as a physician. My unique life experiences have given me a perspective most patients don't have. The relationship a patient has with their surgeon is just as important as the surgeon's expertise. And this relationship is not one size fits all. It doesn't take a lot of time for a surgeon to get to really know their patient and what they want and what they can handle. But it does take a special surgeon to know that this is an important and essential ingredient in a successful relationship with their patient, thereby improving health and surgical results. I required many surgeries over 30 years - all with Dr. Bauer. Never once did I consider another opinion because of my trust in his surgical expertise, his reputation, and who he is as a man.

  • You are the best of the best!

I am writing to express my family’s appreciation and gratitude for the outstanding care you and your staff have provided to our son, Tim. At a time in Tim’s life when the scourge of Crohn’s and Colitis severely impacted him your unequaled surgical skills restarted his life. Acting in consultation with his New Jersey physician, Dr. Paul K. Lerer, and Dr. Simon Lichtiger in New York, you created a plan of treatment to prepare him for his surgeries which were all successfully completed. Tim is a runner, who ran cross country in high school and college and his ability to do so was greatly restricted by his illness. Fortunately, he is now able to resume running and coaching his young students which he truly loves, so much so on the day he returned home from his last surgery, he went to watch the kids practice. He has used his illness to demonstrate to his students that no obstacle is too great to overcome. Your skills as a surgeon have allowed Tim to get on with his life and there are no words which can adequately express our gratitude. During this entire process your confidence and constant reassurance helped not only Tim, but my wife Linda and I get through a parents’ nightmare, the illness of a child. I would be remiss if I did not mention the support of your surgical team, the staff at Mt. Sinai, and your office staff as well. The all exhibited the highest degree of professionalism, which is a reflection of your influence and guidance. You are the best of the best!

  • Thank you for all your help and for being so caring!

Thank you for all your help and for being so caring!

  • Thank God there are angels like you that will allow me to make him happy for the rest of his life.

Dear Dr. Bauer, I cannot thank you enough for saving my husband's life. When I spoke to you after his surgery, I knew it was much more difficult than you let on. I've been with Mike for 10 years, but we just got married this past January. Thank God there are angels like you that will allow me to make him happy for the rest of his life.

  • We think of you often and thank you for the care extended to Vin in previous years. We wish you and your family a happy and healthy new year.

With much gratitude we would like to thank you for the extraordinary care provided during our medical crisis of July 2006.

  • I am so grateful that I was under the care of Dr. Bauer and his colleagues. I highly recommend Manhattan Surgical.

The doctors at Manhattan Surgical are the best of the best. You could not ask for a more skilled, innovative team of gastrointestinal experts. I was diagnosed with Stage 3 rectal cancer in 2010. Dr. Bauer performed the complicated surgeries I needed with exceptional outcomes, and he was involved in all aspects of my recovery. I am so grateful that I was under the care of Dr. Bauer and his colleagues. I highly recommend Manhattan Surgical.

  • Dr Bauer is a very gifted person. He changed my life.

I would like to thank Dr Bauer for putting me back together. I had 2 previous surgery's in New Jersey and was still having problems so I was referred to Dr Bauer from my Brother who is a GI Doctor in NJ. I am very blessed to have had Doctor Bauer. After 2 planned complicated Surgery's, I am now put together and recovering at home after not even 1 month after my last surgery. Dr Bauer is a very gifted person. He changed my life. Love you Dr Bauer

  • He is truly a miracle worker and I will forever be grateful to him for saving my life.

After a visit to the emergency room in April of 2014 (3 days after my husband and I got home from our honeymoon) my world was rocked permanently because of a recurrence of Crohn’s disease and complications following 2 surgeries at a local NJ hospital. Every aspect of the life I knew and enjoyed got turned completely upside-down. I am not sure I would be here today if I didn't get transferred to the Mount Sinai Hospital and put under the care of the surgeon Dr. Joel Bauer. After multiple hospital stays and surgeries, not only does he continue to be my doctor, but also my cheerleader, friend and true expert when it comes to my health. Because of Dr. Bauer and his expertise and experience in dealing with such severe conditions as I was in, I am alive today. Without hesitation, I can say that going forward Dr. Bauer is the only surgeon that I trust with my life. He is truly a miracle worker and I will forever be grateful to him for saving my life.

  • I WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR TAKING SUCH GOOD CARE OF ME WHILE DEALING WITH MY PESKY FISTULA.

You treated him not only physically but emotionally also (which at times was extremely difficult). Again, thank you for always being there for him.

  • YESTERDAY WAS THE FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST SURGERY FOR MY KOCK POUCH.

I can’t put into words what and how much you mean to me, how grateful I am. But every day I think about you kindness and caring. Yes, I “talk” with you every day in my head- you are and will always be one of the most important people in my life. My parents gave me life, but you gave me back my life. So thank you for everything – taking such good care of me both on the operating table and afterwards, your humor that helped ease my worries and fears. Thank you for every single thing.

  • I JUST WANTED TO DROP YOU A NOTE TO SAY THANK YOU.

I really appreciated the time you took to review my scans and discuss the findings. You also made my sister, Ellen, feel much more confident in the direction we are heading with my treatment.

  • MY SINCEREST APPRECIATION TO YOU ON THE RECENT KIND, CARING AND PROFESSIONAL ADVICE YOU GAVE TO ME.

  • EIGHT MONTHS HAVE PASSED SINCE MY SURGERY AND DUE TO YOUR EXPERTISE I AM FEELING FINE AND EVERYTHING IS WORKING AS IT SHOULD.

I want to thank you for your kindness toward me. I really appreciate it more than I can say. Your skill has enabled me to live the life I am living. For this, I am extremely grateful.

  • I REALLY WANT AND FEEL SUCH A STRONG DESIRE TO THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING YOU’VE DONE FOR ME.

Throughout everything and the ten years we have known each other, you always have been someone who made things better for me. You were never just a doctor to me. You always have been a real human being. You have maintained my trust throughout all these years. You were always the one constant and the one I knew I could count on to be as much of an advocate for me as possible, and take care of me. Thank you for being the person you are and the kind of doctor you are.
